Why is acoustic adaptation so important?

Acoustic adaptation means optimal preparation of the room in which the sound will be reproduced and recorded. Adaptation does not only consist in proper damping of the walls, but also in the selection of appropriate sizes of acoustic devices and their placement, which will prevent the suppression of sound waves and thus obtain an ideal sound quality.

The geometry of the room also affects the sound quality. It turns out that rectangular rooms are better in terms of acoustic quality than rooms designed on the basis of a square.

The most important element to start planning for the acoustic adaptation of a given room is to set up settings that positively influence the elimination of sound wave drift. To do this, you can use acoustic panels, absorbers or bass traps.

Both absorbers and acoustic wall panels are mounted on flat surfaces (walls and ceilings). In the case of bass traps, place them in the corners of the room. Ideally, they should cover the entire corner from floor to ceiling.

Acoustic panels are made of polyurethane foam. They absorb acoustic waves of high and medium frequencies due to their structure and density. Although the use of so-called pyramids is a fairly popular solution, it should be remembered that using too many of these panels can adversely affect the overall acoustics. Therefore, other sound-absorbing products should be used in an acoustic room.

A suitable solution for styrofoam is mineral wool acoustic panels.

Mineral wool panels differ significantly in absorption coefficient from the aforementioned pyramids. Despite the fact that their price is much higher than that of foams, this is offset by the quality of operation of such a product.

Bass traps placed in the corners of rooms are mainly used to reduce rumble. This significantly affects the purity of the sound, therefore it is also a necessary element of the acoustic room. Their installation in the corners of the room is not accidental, because low frequencies are excited there, causing noise pollution. Mounting the traps from floor to ceiling almost completely eliminates the unwanted effect, which makes sound recording clearer.

Therefore, acoustic adaptation is very important if you want to get clear sound during recording.

It consists of installations such as the aforementioned acoustic panels or bass traps, but also the appropriate room geometry and selection of the optimal sound system for the size of the room.
